6.7. About Negotiating

Every job-search book, site or workshop (including ForeignMBA.com) includes the negotiation as part of the process. Be extremely careful, however, when negotiating a job offer (if you ever do):

– Many MBA recruiters offer a standard deal: if they hire hundreds of MBAs every year, they cannot afford to customize the offer to everyone. There is usually no negotiating power, as even time frames and training has been arranged in advance.

– Leave salary negotiation as your last option: Focus instead on perks and non-monetary issues first. Negotiating your salary can irritate many recruiters.

– Do not negotiate unless you have several offers: You do not want to close the only door you have open. Additionally, telling company A that company B is offering XYZ is the best way to negotiate.
